I have always had problems with my skin. Unknowingly, for my entire life I was damaging my skin.
My face was always too dry or too oily and I broke out, although I couldn’t understand why.
After years of learning how to properly take care of my skin, I found out that most people make several of the same common mistakes when taking care of their skin, without any idea that they are doing so. If your skin is always somewhat “mad” at you, then you’re probably guilty of at least one of these common mistakes that I’ve made.
Common Skincare Mistakes
First thing. I washed my face too much.
Like, all the time. Every time I was in the bathroom. I loved that tight feeling after. You know. Where your skin feels so clean it almost hurts. I thought that was good. It’s not. For several years, I was unknowingly causing problems with my face.
This was not intended, but now looking back I can see how I had caused my problems.
I washed my face so many times. I used a scrub all of the time, and every product I ever bought was based on what someone else told me was good for my skin! I had dry patches, I had oily patches, I had breakouts, with no apparent reason. I was confused!
After spending several years to learn how to take proper care of my skin, I learned that many skincare mistakes are very common and done without anyone ever realizing it.
Another thing. I scrubbed my face too hard.
I loved those gritty scrubs. The rougher the better. I wanted to feel it scraping. I thought that meant it was working.
But those rough scrubs make tiny cuts in your skin. And over time your skin gets red and sensitive.
That is one of those skincare mistakes to avoid if you want your skin to calm down. I don’t really scrub anymore. My skin does its own thing.
And sunscreen.
I was so bad about sunscreen. Or if it was super sunny. You need sunscreen every day. Cloudy days. Rainy days. Days you’re inside by a window. The sun gets through all of that. And it’s one of the main things that damage your skin over time. Wrinkles. Dark spots. Loose skin. All that happens faster when you skip sunscreen. I put it on every morning. Takes two seconds.
Another thing I didn’t know. The order you put stuff on matters.
I used to just put things on however. Thick cream first. Then serum. Then whatever.
And I’d wonder why nothing worked.
If you put a thick cream on first and then put a serum on top, that serum can’t get through. It’s just sitting there. That is a sneaky skincare mistake that so many people make.
The rule is simple. Thin stuff first. Thick stuff last. So cleanser first. Then watery stuff. Then moisturizer. Then sunscreen if it’s morning. When you do that, your products can actually work.
Okay be honest.
I used to go forever without doing either. Then I’d wonder why I kept breaking out.
Your brushes collect old makeup and oil and bacteria. Your pillowcase collects the same stuff. Then you put all that back on your face every day. It clogs your pores. It makes you break out.
This is one of those bad skincare habits that is so easy to fix. Makes a big difference.
And picking.
Oh, I was so bad at picking.
But picking is one of the worst skincare mistakes, ruining your skin. Because the damage lasts way longer than the pimple would.
When you pick, you push bacteria deeper. That tiny bump turns into a big red mess that stays for weeks. Sometimes it leaves a dark spot or a scar for months. All because you couldn’t leave it alone.
Now when I feel something coming, I just put a patch on it and leave it. My skin handles it.
Another thing. I never gave anything time.
We all want fast results.
But your skin takes about a month to renew itself. It just stays confused.
That is a common skincare mistake that keeps people from seeing real results. Pick a simple routine. Stick with it. Be patient. I know it’s boring but it works.
Oh and one more thing. Don’t forget your neck.
Seriously.
Your face ends at your chin. But your skin doesn’t.
I used to put all my good stuff on my face and ignore my neck and chest. Then one day I looked in the mirror and my face looked fine but my neck looked not fine.
It shows age faster. So when you do your routine, just keep going. Take everything down to your chest. Especially sunscreen. It’s a simple thing but it really helps.
Anyway. I was doing all these common skincare mistakes for years because I just didn’t know. Most of us do this stuff.
Just try to notice the skincare mistakes to avoid. Stop the bad skincare habits. Quit doing the little things that damage your skin.
Your skin doesn’t need a lot. It just needs you to stop doing the wrong stuff. Be gentle.
