Okay so I fell into another travel rabbit hole last night and honestly? I’m not even sorry about it. I was supposed to be doing productive things but instead I spent two hours looking at photos of American coastlines and adding about fifteen new places to my “must go” list.

Here’s the thing I realized. When people talk about best coastal destinations in the U.S. they usually just list the same obvious spots over and over. And yeah those places are great don’t get me wrong. But there’s so much more out there. Quiet corners. 

So I pulled together a list of the spots that keep showing up on every 2026 ranking.

The Hidden Florida Spot That’s Having A Moment

There’s this place called Saint Joe Beach on Florida’s Forgotten Coast that just got named America’s top hidden coastal escape for 2026 . And I’d never even heard of it until now which is exactly the point I guess.

It’s the opposite of everything annoying about beach towns. No massive resorts. No high-rise hotels blocking the view. Just quiet residential neighborhoods and small beach houses where you can actually breathe. The sand is soft and white, the Gulf waters are calm, and here’s the kicker – average nightly accommodation runs about ninety-four dollars per person. In this economy? That’s basically unheard of for a beach vacation.

What makes it special though is the sunset situation. Most Florida panhandle beaches face south or east so you don’t actually get that classic sun-over-water moment. But Saint Joe Beach faces west across St. Joseph Bay. So you get those insane orange and pink skies reflecting off the Gulf every single evening.

California’s Cliffside Beauty

You probably think of beaches when you hear about California, and there is no surprise. However, Shell Beach (which is just north of Pismo Beach) has made the top 8 Beaches in America on HomeToGo’s List of the Best Beaches in America for 2026. The beauty of this little beach really exemplifies the difference between beach going on the East Coast and Beach Going on the West Coast. Walking Ocean Boulevard at golden hour. Hopping over to Pismo Beach for coffee and shops when you want a little civilization.

The Beach That Looks Like Another Planet

I need to talk about Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia because what even is this place. Ancient weathered trees scattered along the shoreline like sculptures. Dead trees. Haunting remains of a maritime forest just sitting there on the sand like nature’s own art installation.

When you visit the Shell Beach area, you will find an unusual and serene environment that evokes feelings that belong in a fantasy movie. According to one travel guide, this area offers the “most fancifully unique” and “out-of-the-world” landscapes to be experienced while walking for long distances and reflecting on your life. The reason to visit this location is for the “vibe.” 

More mossy and mysterious. Less developed. You can bike under live oaks, kayak through marsh creeks, just exist in a landscape that doesn’t look like anywhere else.

The Famous Ones That Actually Earned It

Look I’m usually skeptical of “best of” lists because they always include the same obvious places. But Tripadvisor just released their 2026 Travelers’ Choice Awards and honestly? 

La Jolla Cove in California recently came in the top spot nationally. Plus there’s that whole thing where you can watch gray whales migrate if you hit the right season.

Clearwater Beach ranks #2 amongst beaches in the USA because of its powdery white sandy beach and breathtaking sunsets. Siesta Beach ranks #6 amongst all beaches in the USA because of its huge supply of quartz crystals which keep it’s sand relatively cool throughout the hottest months of the year. Finally, St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach is said to be rarely busy, and it has beautiful blue water that is great for kayaking.

Sometimes the famous best seaside destinations in the U.S. are famous because they’re genuinely that good.

The Outer Banks Thing

So apparently North Carolina’s Outer Banks ranked as the #1 travel hotspot for 2026 according to one major report. 

The Outer Banks got a massive boost from the series of the same name, bringing attention to this chain of barrier islands along the Atlantic. But the show only gets you in the door. What keeps people coming back is the real thing. Fresh seafood everywhere. It’s got that 4.8 star rating on Google Maps for a reason.

For anyone putting together a U.S. beach bucket list for 2026, the Outer Banks deserve a spot. It’s classic East Coast beach energy but with enough space that you don’t feel like you’re fighting for sand.

The Oregon Wildcard

Okay this one’s different but I’m including it because it’s so specific. Depoe Bay on the Oregon coast just got named the top remote destination in the U.S. for 2026. And the description from Islands magazine is living in my head rent-free. There’s Thai food and fish and chips in town.

If you’re actually building a list for the year, here’s what I’d throw on it:

• Saint Joe Beach, Florida – for actual peace and quiet and sunsets that’ll ruin you for other sunsets
• Shell Beach, California – for dramatic cliffs and hidden coves and that perfect balance of solitude and stuff to do
• Driftwood Beach, Georgia – for photos that don’t look real and walks that feel ancient
• La Jolla Cove, California – for sea lions and snorkeling and the #1 ranked beach experience in the country
• Outer Banks, North Carolina – for that Netflix energy and endless coastline
• Depoe Bay, Oregon – for when you want rugged and remote and whales
• Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – for when you want boardwalks and roller coasters and Guy Fieri

What’s Drawing People This Year

Places where you can actually unwind instead of fighting for beach space. The recognition of spots like Saint Joe Beach and Shell Beach and Depoe Bay reflects this shift and are the the best coastal destinations in the U.S. They want the cliffs and the boardwalks and everything in between. I don’t know about you but my 2026 is suddenly looking very coastal. Maybe Saint Joe in the spring. Shell Beach in the summer. Driftwood when the light gets golden in the fall.
