,I have been thinking about water lately. Not sure why. Maybe because it is cold here and I am tired of looking at bare trees. Maybe because water is just easy to think about. It is always there. Always moving.
My friend called me last week. Said he was sitting on some beach in Florida just watching the water. Didn’t have his phone. Wasn’t reading. Just sitting there. I thought yeah, that makes sense.
So I started thinking about places I have been. Places I want to go. Not the ones everyone posts about. Just places where the water looks good and you can sit there and not think about much.
These are some of the best waterfront views in the US. Just places I like.
Best Waterfront Views in the USA
Bay View, Michigan

So there is this spot up in Michigan called Bay View. North of Petoskey. I never heard of it until someone told me about it. They said it is one of those old summer places that has been there forever.
It is just a bunch of old Victorian houses all lined up looking at this bay. Little Traverse Bay. Sailboats out there. Woods behind. Real pretty.
What I like is that it isn’t just a pretty view. They have stuff going on there in the summer. Music things and talks. You sit there and listen to something and the wind comes off the lake. Sounds nice.
One of those most beautiful waterfront destinations in the US that regular people have been going to for a long time. Nothing fancy.
Leland, Michigan

Another Michigan one. Down in the Leelanau Peninsula there is Leland. Lake Michigan on one side. Lake Leelanau on the other. So water everywhere.
There is this place they call Fishtown. Old shacks and docks where fishing boats still work out of. It isn’t a tourist thing. It is real. You can smell the fish. You can see the nets hanging there.
Something about it just feels honest. Not trying to be anything. You can catch a ferry from there to North Manitou Island. Just get on a boat and go.
One of those scenic waterfront places in the US that stays with you. I don’t know why. It just does.
Charlevoix, Michigan

Charlevoix is between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. So two lakes. Double the water.
There is this channel you can walk along to the lighthouse. Watch boats go under the bridge. Round Lake is this perfect blue circle right in the middle of town.
The lakes are just part of everything there. You can feel it. And there are these weird mushroom houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Look like something from a fairy tale. Worth seeing even if you don’t care about that stuff.
One of those best coastal views in the US even though it is lakes.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
Mackinac Island is the one with no cars. Horses and bikes only. That alone makes it different.
It sits in Lake Huron. You take a ferry there and the water is right there the whole time. The Grand Hotel has this huge porch where you can sit and look at the water all day. I have never been but I want to go just for that porch.
You can bike the whole island. Woods. Old buildings. Water the whole way.
They also have fudge. So you can eat fudge and look at water. Hard to beat that.
Kauai, Hawaii
Hawaii is obviously going to have some of the most beautiful waterfront destinations in the US. Kauai especially. They call it the Garden Island.
The thing about Kauai is it doesn’t feel all built up. Just rainforest and waterfalls and cliffs and beaches. Poʻipū Beach has golden sand. Good for swimming, for watching turtles and for just sitting there.
You can spend a lot on a hotel right on the water or you can find cheaper spots. Doesn’t matter. The water is the same.
Jekyll Island, Georgia
Down in Georgia there is Jekyll Island. Different from Hawaii. Slower. Quieter. More your speed if you just want to get away.
Driftwood Beach is the one people talk about. All these old trees washed up on shore. Looks like something from a movie. Photographers love it. I would probably just sit there and look at it.
The island has trails and woods and old mansions from when rich people used to come here in the winter. You can stay on the water without spending a fortune.
Just laid back and real. One of those scenic waterfront places in the US where you can actually relax.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Hilton Head is another Southern one. Southern hospitality and all that.
The food is good. Fresh seafood. Places where you can eat right on the water. One spot is supposed to be the perfect mix between fancy and dive bar. That is my kind of place.
Beaches. Trails. Golf. Art. Whole place is made for just hanging out.
Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada
Lake Tahoe sits on the California-Nevada line. The water is crazy clear. One of the clearest lakes in the world.
It is big. Surrounded by mountains. So you get blue water and snow peaks together. Hard to beat.
Emerald Bay is the one you see in pictures. That little island. The green water. The mountains. Looks fake but it is real.
You can drive the whole thing. Stop wherever looks good. They all look good.
Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

This one is different. Not a beach. Not an ocean. But the water views here are something else.
Snake River runs through the park with the Tetons behind it. There is a spot called Schwabacher Landing where the river gets still and reflects the whole mountain range. People wake up early to see it at sunrise.
Jenny Lake is right at the base of the mountains. You can take a boat or hike. However you see it, you remember it.
Not the usual coastal spot but some of the best waterfront views in the US for sure.
Why We Go
I think we just need to look at big things sometimes. Things that don’t care about us. Things that have been there a long time and will be there a long time after us. Water does that.
These places have it. The kind of views where you stop talking and just look. The kind that stick with you.
So pick one. Go see it. Take someone or don’t. Just stand there and look at the water for a while. It helps. Always does.
