I don’t know about you but sometimes I just pull up pictures of the ocean on my phone. Just stare at them for a minute. Calms me down for some reason. Then I start thinking about actually going to one of those places. Putting my feet in the actual water instead of just looking at it on a screen.

There are so many spots in this country where the coast is just showing off. Places you show up and you can’t help but just stand there for a second. Like okay yeah that is something.

These are some of the best oceanfront destinations in the United States. Just pretty places to go sit by the water.

Pensacola Beach, Florida

So there is this part of Florida down in the panhandle. Pensacola Beach. I had heard people talk about it for years. Finally went and understood what they meant.

The sand is white. Not like normal beach sand. Like really white. And soft. Feels like flour almost when you walk on it. Someone told me it is actually old Appalachian mountains ground down over millions of years and washed down here, which is wild to think about.

The water is that color. You know the one. Sort of greenish blue. Looks like the Caribbean but you are still in Florida and can pay with normal money.

What I liked most is that parts of it are just empty. Because of the national seashore there are long stretches with no houses or hotels or anything. Just sand and water and maybe some birds walking around. You can drive out there and walk for miles and see almost nobody. Good for when you need to get away from people.

It is one of the best oceanfront destinations in the United States that people talk about for a reason. The pictures are real. It actually looks like that.

Carmel Beach, California

Out in California there is this town called Carmel. I mentioned it before probably. The town is real cute. Storybook houses and flowers everywhere. No street addresses which is weird. But the beach is the main thing.

Carmel Beach is wide and the sand is white and the water is this deep green color. There are these cypress trees along the edge that look like they have been bent by the wind their whole lives, which they have.

You can bring your dog here without a leash. People do. Dogs just running around happy. Good energy.

If you watch the water you might see dolphins. Or whales if you are lucky and it is the right time of year. Pelicans fly by low. Just living their lives.

It is one of those scenic oceanfront towns in the United States where you could sit on a bench for an hour and not get bored. Just watching. The sunsets take forever because California. But worth staying for.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Oregon is a whole different thing. The water is cold. Like really cold. The sky is gray a lot. But when it is good it is really good.

Cannon Beach has this big rock called Haystack Rock. It is huge. Just sticks up out of the water. You have seen it in pictures even if you don’t remember. Movies have filmed here because it looks so dramatic.

When the tide goes out you can walk over to the rock and look at tide pools. Starfish and little anemones and crabs. Kids love poking around in there. Grown ups too honestly.

There are puffins on the rock sometimes. Little birds with orange beaks. They nest up there.

The beach is huge and flat. Good for walking a long way. Good for flying kites. They have a sandcastle contest every year. People build amazing stuff and then the tide comes in and takes it away. Kind of nice actually. Nothing lasts forever.

This is one of those picturesque beach destinations in the United States that feels like nature showing off. Like look what I can do when I try.

Siesta Key, Florida

Over on the Gulf side near Sarasota there is Siesta Key. The beach here is famous for the sand. It is quartz. Almost all quartz. So it stays cool even when the sun is beating down. You can walk on it in the middle of the day without burning your feet. That is a real thing.

The water is calm usually. Good for swimming. Good for kids. Clear and warm.

There is a little village nearby with shops and restaurants. You can go after the beach and get ice cream. Walk around. Normal beach town stuff.

But the beach itself is really the thing. That soft cool sand. The gentle water. It is just easy. One of those best coastal vacation spots in the United States where you don’t have to do anything. Just show up and be there and that is enough.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks is pretty in a different way. Not tropical. Not dramatic cliffs. Just long empty beaches and sky that goes on forever.

The light out there is something else. Especially late in the day. Everything turns gold. The sand. The grass on the dunes. The water.

They have the lighthouses too. That black and white one at Hatteras. The striped one at Bodie Island. They have been standing there for over a hundred years just watching the ocean. You can climb some of them if you want. Good view from up there.

Up near Corolla there are wild horses. They have been there for hundreds of years. Came from Spanish ships a long time ago. Now they just walk around on the beach like they own it. Which they kind of do honestly.

It is quiet out there. Especially if you go when school is in session. Just you and the ocean and maybe some birds. Good for clearing your head.

Laguna Beach, California

Down near LA you get Laguna. The coast here has all these little coves and hidden beaches. You have to walk down stairs to get to most of them. Thousand Steps Beach is not actually a thousand steps but it feels like it going back up.

The water is clear down here. Warmer than northern California. You can find tide pools with little crabs and stuff. I spent way too long looking in one once. Felt like a kid again.

The town is built into the hills. Art galleries everywhere. People painting outside. It has this creative vibe but relaxed. Nobody rushing.

The sunsets here are something. All those colors bouncing off the water and the cliffs. Hard to look away. Hard to take a picture that does it justice honestly.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is classic for a reason. Old houses. Lighthouses. That soft light that painters love.

The beaches are different depending which side you are on. The bay side is calmer. Warmer water. Good for families. The ocean side has waves. More dramatic. Cold water but you get used to it after a minute.

Race Beach up in Provincetown is something else. Those big dunes. That wide empty beach. Feels like the end of the world almost.

You can rent a bike and ride through the national seashore. Stop at different beaches. Swim a little. Ride to the next one. Good way to spend a day.

It gets crowded in summer. Everyone wants to be there. But if you go early or late in the season you can have stretches to yourself. Worth it.

Look you can look at pictures all day. I do it too. But being there is different. The way the air feels on your skin. The sound never stopping. The light changing every minute.
