Sadly for them, surviving the plane crash meant they’d only cheated Death temporarily, and the survivors die one by one in more absurd accidents. 2. Final Destination (2003)
The next film moved on from a plane crash and introduced the most memorable opening set-piece of the entire franchise, with a giant highway pile-up. It shows Kim Browning having the same visions Alex had, and she stops several drivers entering the highway before it happens, but like Alex’s group, this wasn’t an escape for Death after all. The Final Destination 2 expanded the mythology of Death’s design, but of course gave fans the much-loved pile-up scene.
3. Final Destination 3 (2006)
It is a roller coaster at an amusement park, with Wendy Christensen getting visions of a massive death trap. Like those before her, she stops others from boarding the ride, but they also become victims of Death. This installment does introduce a useful clue system through photographs, which can suggest a death scenario for each individual. The character of Wendy Christensen, performed amazingly by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, gives the film a much stronger central character than later entries.
4. Final Destination (2009)
Despite it being the fourth film in the series, this installment is surprisingly called “The Final Destination”. However, don’t worry, this isn’t the last in the Final Destination franchise. In this film, the opening disaster is at a stock-car race, with Nick O’Bannon experiencing deathly premonitions of a crash at the race and managing to prevent some from entering the track.
However, death doesn’t forget about them and still gets its victims.
The film was shot in 3-D to really make it a special effects bonanza, but despite many death scenes, the film did generally go down as being a worse entry in the franchise, and critics weren’t impressed.
5. The Final Destination 5 (2011)
The next installment is in 2011, and at first, Final Destination 5 looks just another standalone. Sam Lawton has a premonition of a bridge collapse on his way with co-workers to a corporate retreat, saves others, but the same consequences follow, and a few are unlucky. The film is really important for giving an ending that connects directly to the story of the first Final Destination, and a big revelation completely changes the franchise timeline.
This film became the most acclaimed for a very long time for the franchise, as fans and critics enjoyed the entertainment along with its inventive connection to the original.

A gap of 14 years, and the Final Destination franchise is back in 2025, and the latest installment is called “Final Destination: Bloodlines”. Follows Stefani Reyes, a college student plagued by visions, who discovers a connection between her family surviving a past disaster and another disaster that occurred many years earlier with her grandmother. Final Destination: Bloodlines really expanded the mythology of Death’s machinations, and some characters are returning from the originals, including Tony Todd as William Bludworth. It was the last film appearance for the cult horror icon Tony Todd.
Is Final Destination: Bloodlines worth watching?
Yes, definitely. Final Destination: Bloodlines has been named the best-reviewed Final Destination film to date, and critics have really praised its creative deaths and further expansion of Death’s mythology and design.
