Hey.
I messed up my own body for years. Like, actually years. And the dumb part? I was trying so hard. I wasn’t being lazy. I was just… a lot. Too much. And my body kept going “dude. Please stop.”
I’d wake up sore. Hobble to the bathroom. Look in the mirror and just feel… ugh. You know that ugh? Knees hurting. Back hurting. Hips feeling like concrete. And I’d stand there thinking. What am I even doing wrong? I buy the leggings. I watch the videos. I push myself.
So I’d push harder. Run longer. Lift heavier. Because obviously I just wasn’t trying enough, right?
Wrong.
So wrong.
It is something that I realized many years later. It was not that I was not doing enough. It was rather that I was doing way too little. I would spend the whole day struggling with myself, like I was struggling with a wall.
Yeah.
So here is what I myself figured out. Not telling you what to do. Just. This happened to me. Maybe it helps.
You know that feeling after a workout where you can barely walk and you’re like “yes. That’s it”? I used to love that feeling. I thought it meant I was winning.
That feeling is not winning. That feeling is sometimes your body going. Hey. Please stop.”It holds onto everything. You get puffy. You get hurt. And then you’re on the couch eating toast feeling guilty.
Here’s what nobody told me. The yoga poses for weight loss that actually work? They don’t feel like death instead they feel very relaxing.
And look. I still like a sweaty workout sometimes. I do. Loud music. Feeling like a beast. It’s fun.
But. If your body thinks it’s in danger all the time, it will not let go of belly fat. It just won’t.
That’s where the slow stuff comes in. Not saying stop running. Just saying. Some of the best yoga poses for weight loss are the ones that tell your brain “hey. Relax. We’re okay.” And when you actually relax? Your body finally stops hoarding everything.
Try it once. What’s the worst that happens. You feel a little less tight? Oh no.
Okay here’s the embarrassing one.
You know those mornings you wake up and look at your stomach and just go “ugh. Why am I so puffy?”
I have done that so many times. And most of the time? I was just bloated. Not fat. Bloated. Because I never twisted my body. I just crunched and strained and held my breath.
Real talk. You can do a thousand crunches. But if you never twist? The gas just sits there. I’m being so serious. You look pregnant and it’s literally just air. I learned this after eating a big salad and looking like I swallowed a beach ball.
One of my favorite yoga poses for weight loss is just. Twisting. That too on your couch. You don’t even have to get up. Just twist left. Breathe. Twist right. And done. It pushes the air out. It massages your insides. I lost two inches of bloat in three days just doing that while watching TV.
Not dieting. Not running. Twisting on my couch in old sweatpants.
Try it tonight. Right now if you’re sitting down.
Another thing that took me way too long.
You don’t have to earn rest.
For me, I always thought that unless I had worked really hard, I wouldn’t be able to do anything that’s considered gentle. It’s really crazy thinking because you would never tell that to a friend.
Sometimes you’re just tired. Sometimes you didn’t sleep. Sometimes you just need to be a potato on the floor for ten minutes.
When you push a tired body, you don’t burn fat. You burn out. And then you eat cookies because you’re exhausted and sad.
One of my favorite yoga poses for weight loss is literally just lying down with your legs up on the couch. And done. Legs up. Chill. It drains the fluid from your legs. It calms you down. And a calm body burns more calories than a stressed body. That’s real. Look it up.
Try this: the day you actually feel heavy and gross, don’t do anything hard. You just have to lie on the floor and put your legs up on the couch or the wall. Scroll your phone. Breathe. That’s it. You might stand up feeling two pounds lighter because you finally let your body drain all the crap it’s been holding.
All your body wanted was a break. Not another punishment.
I’m so guilty of the all-or-nothing thing. Oh my god.
“I really don’t have time for an hour so I’m just gonna sit around doing absolutely nothing.” Something I’ve said many times over. And I hate myself for nothing.
Ten minutes is great. Five minutes is good. Two minutes is better than zero. Stop being so dramatic.
Doing yoga exercises for losing weight can be done while wearing pajamas as well. When your coffee is making itself. Either when your laptop is turning itself on or you are scrolling through TikTok videos. You do not need a yoga mat nor any yoga pants.
Here’s what saved me. Three things in the morning. Cat-cow because it feels good. Downward dog because it wakes me up. Low lunge because my hips are always angry from sitting. Takes four minutes. I do it before I brush my teeth. That’s it.
Your body doesn’t need a gym. It needs you to stop overthinking.
Okay. Real talk now.
That belly fat you hate? It’s not the enemy. Stress is the enemy.
I know. I know. You’re so tired of hearing that. I’m tired of saying it. But please just hear me one more time.
Your problem is not going to be solved by just working out. Your stress hormones will make sure that you keep your extra pounds. It is important for your body to feel safe, and it will never feel safe if you despise your body when working out.
Here’s the hard truth. You can do everything right. Count every calorie. Walk every step. But if you come to your mat with a mean attitude—”I hate this, I need to destroy this”—your body hears that as an attack. And it fights back. With more fat.
I’ve done this. I’ve stood there being so mean to myself, doing crunches until my neck hurt, and wondered why nothing changed. Nothing changed because I was being a jerk to myself. That’s it.
The saddest mistake is skipping the gentle stuff because you think it’s too easy. You think you need to suffer. You don’t. You just need to show up. Put your hand on your belly. Breathe. Say “okay. We’re fine.” That moment of not fighting yourself? That does more than an hour of angry anything.
I promise.
Look. If you read all this and realized you do this stuff—you fight yourself, you never twist, you think easy is a waste of time—please don’t feel bad. Please don’t feel ashamed. Please don’t try to start over and buy a bunch of new things.
Just pick one tiny thing. For tonight. Maybe lie on the floor with your legs up. Maybe do one twist before bed. Maybe just put your hand on your belly and say “sorry I’ve been so mean.”
That’s enough. That’s really enough.
We got told that weight loss has to be hard and sweaty and awful, which is not actually true. It just needs you to breathe and move a little and stop getting in your own way.
Now get up, go drink some water, and lie on the floor. Pull your knees in and give yourself a hug. You probably need one.
Your body will figure it out. I promise. It just needs you to stop fighting it for five minutes.
