Okay, so listen, I thought I was great at yoga for years, like actually years, and the worst part is I was trying so hard to do the right thing. I wasn’t being lazy; I was being eager too eager and my body hated me for it.
I would roll out my mat, do my little flow, then step on the scale and feel this little heavy sigh, you know the one like Oh great, what now? Nothing changed again; my pants still felt tight, my stomach still looked the same and I’d think, what am I doing wrong? I bought the expensive leggings, I show up three times a week, I sweat why isn’t this working?
So I’d go more often, I’d hold poses longer, I’d buy a nicer mat because surely a prettier mat means better results, right?
Wrong so wrong.
Took me forever to figure out that I wasn’t failing because I wasn’t doing enough yoga I was failing because I was doing the wrong kind of yoga. I was making common yoga mistakes that turned my practice into a calorie-free nap instead of a fat-burning machine, and I didn’t even know it
Yeah, that was me.
So here’s what I learned, not as some certified expert, just as a friend who wasted a lot of time on Downward Dog, so maybe you don’t have to
You know that feeling after a really gentle yoga class where you lie on your back for ten minutes at the end and you leave feeling all floaty and peaceful like you just had a massage
That feeling is beautiful, and I love it for stress, but here’s the thing nobody told me: that class burned like maybe a hundred calories tops
One of the biggest common yoga mistakes is thinking all yoga is the same for weight loss. It’s not even close. Yin yoga and Restorative yoga are basically a nap with stretching. I’m not kidding; I looked it up. You can burn more calories walking slowly around your block for twenty minutes than lying in child’s pose for an hour
I’m not saying quit the gentle stuff; I still do it on Sundays when I’m cranky and tired, but don’t trick yourself into thinking it’s changing your body. Three gentle classes a week won’t move the scale, I promise you that
And look, I love stretching. I mean, I really, really love it. The way my hamstrings feel after a deep forward fold is one of my favorite feelings on earth
But here’s something nobody told me: flexibility alone does absolutely nothing for weight loss
Another one of those sneaky common yoga mistakes is treating every pose like it’s just about getting bendier. You hold Warrior II for five breaths, but your legs aren’t shaking; you’re just standing there looking strong while your muscles take a vacation
Your body burns more calories when it’s building muscle, not just stretching muscle
Here’s the embarrassing one, the one that makes me feel silly just thinking about it
You know those moments in class when the teacher says Take Plank and everyone around you is shaking and groaning and you quietly drop to your knees because it’s hard and you don’t want to look like you’re struggling
I’ve done that so many times and every single time I cheated myself out of the pose that actually works your core the most. Plank is not punishment; Plank is your fat-loss best friend, but only if you stay in it with your belly tight and your butt down
One of the most common yoga mistakes I see everywhere is letting your low back sag in Plank or Downward Dog. Your belly hangs toward the floor like a hammock and you think you’re doing the pose, but you’re not; you’re just sort of hanging there like laundry
When you engage your core for real, pull your navel toward your spine, and squeeze everything tight, suddenly that pose is ten times harder and ten times more useful for burning calories
I’m also so guilty of the once a week trap, oh my god
You go to a great sweaty Power Yoga class on Saturday morning, you feel amazing, you think yes I’m doing it I’m a yoga person now and then you don’t go again until next Saturday because you’re busy, you’re tired, life happened.
Here’s the sad truth: your metabolism doesn’t care about your Saturday heroics
One of the most frustrating common yoga mistakes is practicing so inconsistently that your body never adapts. You show up, work hard, disappear for six days, then show up again and wonder why nothing changes
Your body needs frequency, not just intensity. Four twenty-minute flows at home will do more for weight loss than one ninety-minute class per week. I learned this the hard way after six months of being a weekend warrior with nothing to show for it except a very flexible spine and the same soft belly
Okay, I’ve been nice, but now I need to be real with you, like really real
If yoga is the only thing you do for exercise, you might be waiting a very long time to lose weight
I know you’ve heard that yoga is enough for some people, and maybe it is for those people. Good for them. I’m happy for them. I’m not one of them, and you might not be either
Here’s the hardest truth I know, the one that hurts to admit: you can flow beautifully, you can hold Crow pose, you can touch your forehead to your shins, but if you’re not also walking or jogging or lifting something heavy a few times a week, you’re just a very flexible person with the same body fat you started with
One of the most heartbreaking common yoga mistakes is believing that your one hour on the mat cancels out the twenty-three hours you spend sitting at a desk or on your couch
It doesn’t; it’s math: you have to move more total
And real talk for a second
You know those nights you get home from a late yoga class, you’re so tired you could cry, your bed is right there, and you think I already exercised today; that’s enough. I don’t need to walk or move anymore
I’ve said that so many times and every single time I forgot that weight loss doesn’t happen just in class; it happens in all the little moments in between: the after-dinner walk you skip, the stairs you don’t take, the parking spot at the back of the lot you choose, the elevator instead of walking up three flights
This is one of those common yoga mistakes that feels so small but matters so much: thinking yoga is the whole answer when really it’s just one piece of the puzzle
Look if you read all of this and realized you make most of these mistakes, please don’t feel bad, please don’t feel ashamed, please don’t throw away your mat and give up and go back to doing nothing
Just pick one thing, one small change for this week: maybe adding one Plank that actually engages your core, maybe swapping one gentle class for a sweaty one, maybe just going for a fifteen-minute walk after dinner on top of your yoga
That is enough; that is more than enough
We’ve been taught that good yoga for weight loss needs to be complicated and advanced, and you need to be able to do fancy arm balances and headstands. It doesn’t it just needs to be consistent and honest and a little bit uncomfortable and it starts with knowing these common yoga mistakes, not so you can feel bad about yesterday but so you can finally, finally stop getting in your own way
Now go drink some water, roll out your mat for ten minutes even if you don’t feel like it and for the love of everything, engage your core in Plank
Your body will catch up. I promise it just needs you to get out of its way for a little while
