The Insidious franchise is a must-watch for lovers of supernatural horror, haunted homes, astral projection, and creepy otherworldly monsters. The franchise, produced by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, introduced viewers to the spiritual entity plane-the Further, inhabited by lost souls and sinister things.
However, this poses a question for newcomers to the franchise: What order should you watch the Insidious movies in?
There have been five Insidious films released with the plot flitting forward and backward in time. The third and last installments are both prequels, while the fifth, Insidious: The Red Door, takes place years after the first two movies.
So, should you watch them in release order or chronological order? Everything you need to know:
Insidious Movies in Order of Release
The simplest way to watch the franchise is by release date:
| Order | Movie | Release Year |
| 1 | Insidious | 2010 |
| 2 | Insidious: Chapter 2 | 2013 |
| 3 | Insidious: Chapter 3 | 2015 |
| 4 | Insidious: The Last Key | 2018 |
| 5 | Insidious: The Red Door | 2023 |
Every Insidious Movies in Order Explained
1. Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
Release: 2015
Director: Leigh Whannell
In chronological order, Insidious: Chapter 3 is the earliest full story of the franchise.
This film follows Quinn Brenner as she, a high schooler, tries to contact her dead mother and inadvertently calls something far more terrifying. Quinn’s father hires the supernatural investigator Elise Rainier, whose decision not to talk with spirits is prompted by her own traumatic past events.
It is with Elise that the film introduces one of the familiar antagonists known to the fans of the franchise.
What Do Critics and Fans Think?
Despite some mixed reviews, many audience members have responded more favorably to this film, highlighting the tension. Some Rotten Tomatoes reviews note the building of suspense, while others were of the belief that, as a prequel, it failed to provide something fresh to the franchise. For the fans who’d want to learn more about the character of Elise, however, it is key due to her much more substantial role.
2. Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
Release: 2018
Director: Adam Robitel
The Last Key takes viewers even deeper into Elise Rainier’s past.
It follows Elise and her troupe of paranormal investigators to the house of her childhood – returning there throws up some painful childhood ghosts, both of the mortal and ghostly varieties. With the appearance of an ancient supernatural foe, the story delves into Elise’s troubled family past. The movie has quite a few flashbacks to Elise’s youth, so if you are trying to place this within the film timeline, a little more care may be necessary.
Public Reception
The good thing is, with a story featuring one of your favourite characters from a series, one need not be concerned if its reception may have been a bit of an iffy mix of positive and negative for the majority, because The Last Key is most worthwhile if Elise is up there with your preferred characters.
3. Insidious (2010)
Release: 2010
Director: James Wan
Everything really does start here in Insidious. The movie focuses on the Lambert family, specifically Josh and RenaiLambert. Their son, Dalton, mysteriously falls into an inexplicable coma, and once strange occurrences start happening, it doesn’t take long for them to realise this is more sinister than what meets the eye. Dalton’s situation is because of something a lot bigger and more supernatural than they could have ever imagined. Loved Insidious? Here is the complete list of 25 horror movies you must watch.
Why It’s Still Important?
The reviews remain split regarding certain tonal decisions as to the original film’s approach; even later films have acknowledged Wan’s talent when it comes to a good jump scare. As far as most people looking for horror, there is still no Insidious other than this one really; it’s a really enjoyable and pretty much classic haunted house film that I really recommend giving another shot if you haven’t.
4. Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)
Release: 2013
Director: James Wan
Chapter 2 begins immediately after the events of the first film.
Hoping their terror has ended, Josh must realize he’s not free of his past, or rather, his future. Strange things are happening, and there are strong implications of The Further being connected to Josh in some way, shape, or form. So Renai, Lorraine, Elise’s co-workers, and others will start to uncover Josh’s history to find out the truth. There are also various flashback sequences in The Further that go back to Josh’s childhood and even reference astral projection in the film.
What do critics think?
The sequel boasts a current 38% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer (audience reception lands at 57% on the Popcornmeter, with reviews noting it doesn’t quite deliver the suspense and novelty of the original as much, while viewers noted the movie had jump scares and that it continues the tale after the first film). But if you are invested in the Lambert story, you have no other choice but to check out Chapter 2 if that becase for you.
5. Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
Release: 2023
Director: Patrick Wilson
More than 10 years later, we had started with us, The Lambert Family, once again in The Red Door, Dalton Lambert. Is currently in college, and Josh is still struggling to come to grips with memories that are haunting he can’t figure out fully yet… WhenDalton begins to experiment with his artistic talents, the connection he still has with The Further returns… Patrick Wilson will be making their directorial debut while at the Same time he’ll play Josh Lambert.
Public Reception
Most of The Red Door earned divisive reviews from critics, but many welcomed how the film tackled its theme of family trauma and emphasized the Lambert family’s characters. Yet, many thought that the franchise was slipping when compared to its more thrilling entries, as seen in their Rotten Tomatoes reviews: Overall, it wraps up the main arc of the Lambert family history in an essential way.
Is There Another Creepy Insidious Movie in 2026?
Yes, there is.
Insidious: Out of the Further has been slated for a theatrical release on August 21, 2026, making it the sixth installment of the franchise.
Since that film hasn’t been released as of August 11, 2026, we’re not going to be incorporating it as another “now that’s been released” on the watch-order page. We will update that placement when they finally release the film, which you will also be able to keep track of here after all things on the new creepy flick that’ll center on a new story with a mom with ties to The Further as Elise Rainier makes a comeback.
