Classic Coastal Destinations That Never Go Out of Style

When it gets warm out I start thinking about the beach. Not even a specific one. Just being near the water. Sitting there. Not doing much.

There are a lot of beach towns now. New ones all the time. People find some place and next thing you know it is everywhere on social media. That is cool. But I like the old ones. The ones that have been there forever. The ones your folks probably went to.

These are the classic coastal destinations. They don’t change much and that is fine.

Cape Cod

So Cape Cod is this part of Massachusetts that sticks out into the ocean. Old houses. Lots of gray wood. Roses everywhere. Lighthouses. You have seen pictures.

I went a few years back. Didn’t do anything special. Just hung out. Rode bikes to get coffee in the morning. Sat on the beach. Ate ice cream at night like everyone else.

What I liked was how slow it was. Nobody rushed. People read books on their porches. Kids played outside. At night it got quiet. Not in a bad way.

You can go to Provincetown if you want more stuff happening. Or Chatham if you want fancy. But really you could pick any town and be fine. They all have the same feel.

It is one of those timeless beach destinations. Been around forever. Will be around forever. Works every time.

The Outer Banks

Down in North Carolina the coast turns into these long skinny islands. The Outer Banks. Ocean on one side. Sound on the other. Just a strip of sand in the middle.

I drove down to Hatteras once. Long drive. One road. Slow going. But when you get there it makes sense. The lighthouse is black and white. You can climb it if you want. I did not.

You can drive on the beach in some spots. Just pull your car right onto the sand. Park wherever. Feels like you are getting away with something but everyone does it.

Up near Corolla there are wild horses. Been there for hundreds of years. Came from old Spanish ships. Now they just walk around. Saw a few just standing there looking at the water. Did not care about people at all.

One of the best coastal towns in the U.S. if you want something that feels old and not fake.

Carmel

California is different. The water is cold. Really cold. You don’t just jump in. You wade in slowly and question your choices. But the coast is beautiful so it is fine.

Carmel is a little town down near Big Sur. Really cute. Like almost too cute. Houses look like storybooks. Flowers everywhere. No street numbers. You find places by how they look. “The blue one with the fence.” And people just know.

I sat on the beach there one evening. Watched the sun go down. Took forever. California sunsets just keep going. Changing colors. Some guy walking his dog. Couple taking pictures. Kid trying to fly a kite with no wind. Normal stuff. Felt good.

Artists have been coming here forever. Writers too. You can feel it. Like the whole place is for making things.

One of the most beautiful coastal places in the US. Bring a jacket though. Even in summer. Trust me.

Laguna Beach

Down near LA you get Laguna. The coast here has all these little coves. Hidden beaches. You walk down stairs to get to them. Thousand Steps Beach is not actually a thousand steps but it feels like it going back up.

Water is warmer here. Clearer. You can find tide pools. Little crabs and stuff. I poked around in one for way too long once. Felt like a kid.

The town is in the hills. Art galleries everywhere. People painting outside. Creative vibe but relaxed. Nobody in a hurry. Everyone friendly.

One of those iconic beach destinations that actually deserves it. Sometimes famous places get ruined. Too crowded. Too many chains. Laguna stayed itself. Expensive but itself.

Why We Go Back

You can go anywhere. New places all the time. People find some spot and suddenly everyone is there. That is great. Go.

But the old places hit different. The historic seaside towns that have been doing this forever. You show up and you know what you are getting. Water. Sand. Some old food place that has been there since the 50s. No surprises.

I think we go back because it feels like something. Not sure what. Just something. The same water people have been looking at for a long time. That means something I guess.

So pick one. Cape Cod. Outer Banks. Carmel. Laguna. Or all of them over time. They will be there.

Pack a bag. Go sit by the water. It is good for you. Enjoyed the article, follow dturban for more travel updates.
