I used to think glass skin was fake.
Like airbrushed fake. Like filtered fake. Like only rich people with facials every week fake.
Because my skin never looked like that. Ever. It looked tired. Or oily. Or dry. Or red. Or all of those at the same time somehow.
I tried so many things. Expensive things. Cheap things. Things that burned. Things that did nothing. I watched so many videos. Read so many articles. I was so confused all the time.
Then I met a Korean woman. She was older. Maybe fifty. Her skin looked like a baby’s. Not in a weird way. Just… smooth. Glowy. Like she drank a lot of water and never stressed about anything.
I asked her what she does. She said nothing special. Then she told me a few things. Just casually. Like oh I do this. Oh I don’t do that.
I went home and tried them. Not all at once. Just one or two.
And slowly my skin stopped being so angry at me.
So here. This is what she told me. Plus some stuff I learned after.
1. Don’t wash your face, when you wake up.
It sounds gross.
But think about it. You were sleeping. That’s all. Unless you have a cat sleeping on your face or you sweat a ton, your face isn’t dirty. It’s just… been resting.
Just splash water. Lukewarm. A bunch of times. Pat dry.
That’s it.
The first few days I felt greasy. But by day four my skin wasn’t dry at 10am anymore. So I kept going.
2. Use oil to clean your face at night.
I have acne. Well. Had. Still get some.
So oil on my face scared me. A lot.
But oil cleansers are different. They stick to the sunscreen and sweat and dirt from the day. Then you wash it all off with a regular cleanser.
It doesn’t break me out. It actually helps.
Do I do this every night? No. Sometimes I just use a wipe and fall asleep. But when I do it right, my face looks calmer the next day.
3. Save rice water.
When you make rice. You know how the water is cloudy? Save it.
The next day, put it on your face. Just splash it on.
A grandma told me this. I felt stupid trying it. But my face looked brighter after a couple weeks.
It’s free. So whatever. Worth a try.
4. Put toner on more than once.
Someone said seven times. Seven. I almost cried.
But you don’t need seven. Just two or three.
Put some on. Wait a little. Put more on. Wait. Put more on.
Your skin drinks it. That’s all a glass skin routine is anyway. Just giving your skin water until it’s full.
5. Don’t skip essence.
Essence looks like water. Feels like water.
But without it, the rest of your korean skincare routine steps just sit on top of your face. They don’t go in.
With it, everything sinks down.
I didn’t use essence for years because I didn’t want to buy another product. Then I tried it. And I felt stupid.
6. Pat don’t rub.
When you rub, you’re pulling your skin. Over years that makes wrinkles.
When you pat, you’re just pushing product in. Plus it wakes up your face.
I felt dumb doing this at first. My boyfriend laughed at me. I didn’t care.
My skin looks better than his.
7. Sheet masks when you feel bad.
Not every day. That’s a lie.
But on days when you’re sad. Or tired. Or your period is coming. Or you just feel ugly.
Put a cold sheet mask on. Lie down and just don’t look at your phone
It’s not about the mask. It’s about the twenty minutes of quiet.
8. Sunscreen every day.
I really hate it. Sunscreen is annoying.
But without it, nothing else matters. The sun breaks down your skin slowly. Underneath. Where you can’t see it.
Korean sunscreens are nice though. They just feel like lotion. No white stuff. No smell.
I try to put it on every morning. I forget sometimes. But I try.
9. Eat kimchi or yogurt or something fermented.
Your stomach and your face is connected.
When I eat bad for a few days. Like pizza and candy and chips. My chin breaks out.
When I eat kimchi or yogurt or pickles. My face is calmer.
It’s real.
10. Hot water on face?A big NO
I love hot showers. I stand there until the water gets cold sometimes.
But hot water strips your face. Takes all the good oil off.
Now I wash my face at the sink with cool water. Then I take my hot shower and keep my face out.
It’s annoying. But my face stopped being tight after showers so I deal with it.
11. Put oil on at the end.
After moisturizer. Just a drop of oil. Or sleeping mask.
It seals everything in. Like a lid. So you don’t wake up dry.
Many times I use to skip this because I thought it would break me out. It doesn’t.
12. Be lazy sometimes.
Some nights I do nothing.
No oil cleanse. No toner. No patting. Nothing.
And my face doesn’t get mad.
Because the best korean skincare routine steps are the ones you can actually do. Not the ones that make you feel guilty.
Being lazy is fine. I’m lazy a lot.
I still have bad skin days.
I still get pimples before my period. I still have big pores on my nose.
But my face doesn’t hurt anymore. It doesn’t sting. It doesn’t feel tight.
Conclusion
These korean beauty secrets didn’t make me perfect. Just made me stop fighting with my own face.
And when you can’t do anything? Go to sleep. Try again tomorrow.
You’re doing fine. Really.
Now go drink some water. Your face needs it.
