The Ultimate Travel Packing List For Any Vacation

I always pack much stuff when I go on a trip. This is something I do every time I travel. I am talking about overpacking for trips. I did this on my trip to Europe. I had much stuff in my suitcase that I could not even pick it up. A man from Germany helped me with my suitcase. I was really struggling with my suitcase. This man helped me out. I was on my trip to Europe and I had a lot of trouble with my suitcase because of overpacking. Overpacking is a habit of mine when it comes to packing for trips like my trip, to Europe.

I would stand in my bedroom staring at my closet feeling that little spin of panic. I would think, what if I need this sweater what if it rains what if there is a fancy restaurant what if I spill something on my only pair of pants. So I would add shirts, more shoes, more jackets, more of everything because I thought being prepared meant having options.. That was wrong so incredibly wrong.

It took me trips to realize I was failing because I was packing for things that never happened. I was preparing for emergencies and fancy situations that never occurred. I was packing for the person I wanted to be, not who I really’m

You know that person who wakes up early does yoga on the beach visits museums all day and then goes to a dinner. That is not really me.

I sleep in I eat street food. I walk around in regular shoes.. I kept packing for that other person anyway.

So here is what I learned not as a lecture. As a friend who has dragged way too many useless things through way too many airports so maybe you do not have to.

The Real Packing List For Vacation Starts With Travel Clothing

You know that feeling when you lay out ten outfits and think, I need all of these because what if I do not like how one looks. I used to do that every time I thought the more options, the better like I was going to a fashion shoot, not a normal trip.

That feeling is not preparation that is anxiety. Travel clothing takes up space and weight and mental energy and you are already going to be tired from traveling you do not need to add decision fatigue every morning.

Here is the rule that changed everything for me when creating a packing list for vacation. Pack for one week even if you are going longer. Pick three tops that go with two bottoms and one dress or nice outfit in case. Everything should. Match. If you cannot wear a top with least two different bottoms leave it at home. The only exception is underwear and socks because those are small and you will want ones every day.

One mistake people make is packing their closet. They do this because they are scared of not having the clothes. I have a secret for you travel clothing. No one really cares what you wear. The people who live there they are not looking at you. Other tourists they are not looking at you either. You are a person walking around you are not the person in anyone Vacation. The only person who will remember what you wear is you and you will remember it as the thing that made your suitcase too heavy and your shoulders hurt.

Shoes Are The Great Betrayal

And look I love shoes I mean I really love them. I have a shelf at home dedicated to shoes I bought for trips and then barely wore. Sneakers for walking sandals for days flats for dinners boots in case it is cold I have brought them all and regretted most of them.

Here is something nobody told me shoes weigh much more than you think and they take up so much more space than you think and they are the thing that pushes your suitcase from fine to I need to sit on this to zip it.

For any packing list for vacation that actually works you need three pairs of shoes. One comfortable walking shoe that is already broken in because new shoes on a trip is a kind of torture. One nicer option, like a sandal or flat for dinners or evenings out.. One practical shoe that can handle whatever your destination throws at you rain or beach or cobblestone streets.

I am not saying you cannot bring a pair I have done it I am just saying, every time I brought that fourth pair I wore it exactly zero times and felt like an idiot carrying it around the airport.

The Toiletry Bag Lie We All Believe

Okay  here is the one that makes me feel really embarrassed just thinking about it.

You know those nights before a trip when you are getting ready and you take out all your products from the bathroom and put them into bottles? You do this because you think you might need that special face mask or exfoliating scrub or hair oil that you have not used in a time. I have done that times. I have packed my skincare routine that took up a lot of space in my suitcase.. I end up using only two things because when you are tired, from traveling the last thing you want to do is a long skincare routine.

Here is what I do now for my packing list for vacation. I wish I had figured this out earlier. The three and three rule, three skincare products, cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen that is it. And three makeup products, concealer, mascara, something for lips that is all you need. You are on vacation you are allowed to look like you’re on vacation you do not need to look like a filtered version of yourself.

This is one of those packing list for vacation tips that feels so small. Saves so much space and so much time every single morning. You are not going to a photoshoot you are going to see things and eat things and exist in a place your face is fine.

The Tech Tangle That Got Me Every Time

I am also so guilty of the I need every device trap. I have packed a laptop for a beach trip because what if I need to answer emails. I have packed a tablet because what if I want to watch movies. I have packed my camera and three lenses and chargers for all of them. Then also a power bank and an adapter and headphones and spare cables.

I have stood in security pulling all of this out of my bag like I was performing a trick feeling so prepared and responsible.. Then I sat on the plane and stared at my phone for six hours because I was too tired to actually do anything with any of the other devices.

The actual smart packing list for vacation includes one device, your phone and maybe one secondary if you really need to work or have a specific reason. One charger, one power bank, one adapter that works for your destination that is it everything else is weight and anxiety and things to lose.

If you desperately need to watch movies on a screen your phone is right there and it is fine you survived childhood without a tablet you can survive a flight.

The What If Trap That Almost Ruined Me

Here is the thing that took me the longest to learn, like long.

Not every item in your packing list for vacation needs to cover a disaster scenario. You do not need an aid kit with seventeen different bandages. You do not need emergency snacks that you will never eat. You do not need a sewing kit or a backup phone or a portable fan or a travel pillow that takes up the top of your suitcase.

Those things are everywhere I mean everywhere there are shops where you are going there are pharmacies there are people who will help you if you need something you are not going to a desert island unless you are actually going to a desert island and if you are, that is a different conversation.

When you pack for emergencies that never happen you do not get a stress-free trip you get a heavy bag and a sore back and the nagging feeling that you forgot something because you brought so much stuff you cannot actually find anything, one of the most common mistakes people make with their packing list for vacation is treating it like a survival kit instead of a vacation you are going on a trip, not an expedition.

The Medicine Mistake That Scares Me

Okay I need to be real with you for a second.

Medicine is the one thing you should overpack not because you will need it but because needing it and not having it in a country is genuinely terrifying.

I once had a reaction in a country where I did not speak the language and could not read the pharmacy signs and I cried in a corner of a train station because I had forgotten my antihistamines never again.

For any packing list for vacation I now include any prescription medication you take regularly plus a few extra days in case your flight gets delayed pain relievers because headaches happen antihistamines, because you never know what you are allergic to, antacids because street food is amazing but sometimes it fights back and a small pack of whatever you take for colds or stomach issues because being sick on vacation is already bad enough without having to find a pharmacy in another language.

Everything else you can buy there everything you can figure out but your medicine pack, that is your safety net.

The Arrival Day Strategy That Changed Everything

Here is the underrated part of any packing list for vacation the outfit and items you need on day one should not be buried at the bottom of your suitcase.

You land you are tired you are grumpy you want a shower and clean clothes and your phone charger. If you have packed all of those things in the middle of your bag under three jackets and your backup shoes and a book you are not going to read you are going to be angry at yourself and everyone, around you.

When you are packing for a trip pack an arrival day kit at the top of your bag or in your carry on. This kit should have a change of underwear because you will want ones immediately. You should also pack a shirt. Do not forget your phone charger and adapter. A toothbrush and small toothpaste are also necessary. If you take any medication be sure to pack that well. That is all you really need for the day. Everything else can wait until you are in your room with the door closed and a glass of water and five minutes to breathe.

One of the practical things I have learned about packing for vacation is to pack your bag like you are going to have your checked luggage lost and need to survive for 24 hours with only what is in your carry on. This is a strategy because sometimes your checked luggage does get lost and when it does you will be so grateful you thought ahead and packed the essentials in your carry on.

The Permission Slip You Did Not Know You Needed

If you have read all of this. Realized that you have been taking too much stuff with you for years then do not feel bad about it. Do not feel ashamed about it either. You do not have to get rid of all your bags and start over again and you do not have to spend money that you do not have.

Just make one change for your next trip. For example you can try to take three pairs of shoes with you.. You can leave your laptop at home. You can also tell yourself that it is okay to wear a shirt than once.

You can sit with your suitcase. Say to yourself I do not need to be ready for everything travel bags are for travel and I just need to be ready, for what really matters on my trip like my travel documents and clothes.

That is enough. That is more than enough. We have been taught that good packing means packing for every scenario but that is not true. Good packing just needs to be thoughtful and practical and honest about who you are on vacation not who you wish you were. Your packing list for vacation should look like you not like some version of a traveler who wakes up early and goes hiking and then out to dinner and then dancing. You should pack for the version of yourself who will actually be, on that trip the one who gets tired the one who eats much gelato, the one who wants to sit on a bench and watch people walk by.

You should pack for that person. You will have the best trip of your life. Now go close your suitcase before you add one thing you do not need.
