Retinol for Beginners: Benefits, Usage & Common Mistakes

Okay so you bought the retinol.

I know. I saw it on your bathroom shelf time I was over. That little tube. Still unopened. Maybe you stared at it a couple of times picked it up read the back put it down.. Maybe you tried it once and woke up the next morning thinking your face was going to fall off.

First of all. Breathe. I’ve been there. We’ve all been there.

Here is what retinol is like. People talk about retinol like it is magic. Nobody tells you the things about retinol. The messy things, about retinol. Like how I peeled and hid inside my house for three days because of retinol. So let me tell you how retinol really is.

So what is retinol?

Honestly it’s just Vitamin A.. It does something cool. It helps get rid of skin cells.. Your skin listens. It starts looking. Those lines around your eyes soften. Dark spots start fading.

Here’s the catch. Retinol can be a little dramatic. You can’t just use it every night. Expect your skin to be happy. It’ll get upset. And trust me you don’t want that.

The slow and steady approach works

I know you are really excited. You want to see results. You want to wake up the day and look like you just got back, from a spa. I understand this. I am the way to make this happen with the spa results. You want the spa results. I am the way to get the spa results.

Start with two nights a week. Just two. For a weeks. Why? Because your skin has no idea what retinol’s. It’s like introducing a person to your friend group. You ease them in. Let your skin get comfortable.

Nighttime only. No exceptions.

Don’t even think about using it in the morning. Retinol and sunlight don’t mix. The sun breaks it down. Makes your skin super sensitive. So use it at night. Right before bed.

Please pat your face dry before you apply it. I know you’ve heard about applying skincare on skin.. Not with retinol. Damp skin makes it absorb fast and too deep. That’s what causes irritation.

The pea-sized amount is not a joke

I used to think it was a joke.. Honestly that’s all you need. A tiny dot. Dab it around. That’s it. More retinol doesn’t mean results. It just means redness and peeling.

Moisturizer is your friend

Retinol dries you out. A lot. If you don’t moisturize your skin will. Flake. So after your retinol sinks in slather on some moisturizer. A good one. Thick. Nourishing.

The mistakes I made so you don’t have to

I used it every night at first. By day three my skin was a mess. It was red and flaky and tight and painful. Do not use retinol like I did. Also you should wear sunscreen every morning. Your skin will shine when you use retinol. But remember retinol makes your skin super sensitive to the sun.

Do not mix retinol with strong products on the same night. No harsh. Strong vitamin C serums. Just use a moisturizer, with retinol.

The weird phase (its temporary)

When you start using retinol your skin might go through a phase. A little redness. Some dryness. Peeling.. Please don’t give up. It lasts a weeks.. Then your skin will look different. Glowy.

If it gets too bad try the sandwich method. Moisturizer, retinol, then another layer of moisturizer. It’s like a buffer.

The honest truth

Starting retinol isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being patient with yourself and your skin. Some days your skin will look amazing. Some days it’ll look cranky.. If you stick with it you’ll see results.. It’s worth it.

So go ahead. Open that tube. Use that pea-sized dot.. Know that I’m right there, with you figuring this out one night at a time. We’ve got this.
