Hair Care Myths

10 Hair Care Myths About Hair Care Debunked

Here is something embarrassing that I would like to share with you. Did you know that once I went for an entire month without washing my hair because I couldn’t sleep.

You know how it is when you are lying there at 2am and you are scrolling through your phone because your brain will not shut up.

I came across this person who said that hair care products are bad for you and your hair knows what it is doing so if you just leave it alone your hair will become perfect.

No grease no dryness only natural beauty.

I wanted that badly.

I was so tired of my hair being greasy the day after I washed it also I was tired of buying hair care products that did not work.

So I stopped using hair care products.

I put away my shampoo and my conditioner. I waited.

The first week was fine my hair was just a little oily. I figured my hair was just getting used to something

The second week was really tough I had to wear hats all the time even when I was, at home.

The third week was awful my hair was so greasy that I could actually shape it with my fingers it was like my hair was clay I could mold it and shape it like clay.

By the week I had had enough of my hair I washed my hair four times in a row I used a lot of shampoo almost half a bottle of shampoo.

When my hair dried I almost cried because it felt so good to be clean.

Why did I do that to myself I ask.

Because I wanted to believe there was an answer but there is not there is just hair and hair is messy sometimes.

So let me tell you about some things I believed maybe you believe them too that is okay I am the one who walked around with clay hair for a month I have no right to judge anyone.

The training thing, that your hair can learn to be less oily I wanted this to be true badly.

But your scalp does not have a brain it is skin it makes oil at whatever rate it makes oil some people make a lot some make a little hair care products do not change that rate they just wash away what is there.

When you stop using hair care products the oil keeps coming it does not slow down it just builds up.

I have a friend who washes her hair a week and it looks great she did not train her scalp she just got lucky.

I have another friend who washes every day or she feels like a french fry she is not doing anything wrong both are normal.

So please do not suffer through weeks of hair because you think there is a reward at the end there is not just wash your hair when it feels dirty that is it.

The trimming thing, that cutting your hair makes it grow faster I believed this for years.

I would go to the salon every six weeks I would watch them snip off half an inch. I would ask, will this help it grow and they would say yes.

Then one day it hit me hair grows from your scalp not from the ends cutting the ends does not tell the roots to work that would be like cutting your fingernails to make your feet grow.

So why do people say it because trimming gets rid of split ends and split ends travel up the hair shaft and make your hair look thin and frizzy so if you do not trim your hair might break off at the ends, which means it will not look longer even though it is growing.

Trim your hair if you want ends but do not trim because you think it will make your hair grow faster it will not you can not trick biology.

The brushing thing, a hundred strokes every night who made this up I tried it once I sat on my bed with a brush. I counted, by the time I got to fifty my arm was sore by the time I got to a hundred I was annoyed and my hair was staticky and my scalp hurt.

A little brushing is nice it pulls oil from your scalp down the length of your hair but a few gentle strokes is plenty a hundred is just irritating your scalp. Breaking your hair.

Also please do not brush your hair when it is wet wet hair is fragile it. Snaps use a wide tooth comb or your fingers be gentle.

The daily washing thing, that you are dirty if you do not shampoo every morning I spent years washing my hair every day because I thought that is what normal people did and my hair was always dry frizzy always angry at me.

Because I was stripping it every day your natural oils are not the enemy they protect your hair when you wash them away every day your scalp panics and produces more oil so you wash again it is a cycle.

I wash my hair twice a week now it took a weeks to adjust there was a greasy phase I wore a lot of hats but now my hair is less oily than when I washed it every day and less dry.

If you have an oily scalp you might need to wash your hair more often if you work out a lot you might need to wash your hair more often that is fine but if you are washing every day just because you think you are supposed to try taking a break.

The conditioner thing, never put it on your roots I followed this rule for long flipping my head upside down treating my scalp like it was off limits.

But conditioner on your roots is not going to kill you if you have hair or curly hair your roots might want moisture too I put conditioner on my roots now not a ton, just a little my hair is fine.

Use conditioner where your hair needs it you know your hair than some random rule does.

And the big one, the one that still makes me sad that damaged hair can be fixed it can not I am sorry it can not.

No mask, no oil, no potion nothing can truly fix split ends or heat damage you can make it feel softer you can fake it for a while but you can not repair the hair shaft hair is not alive once it is broken it is broken.

The only fix is time and scissors cut off the damaged parts and let healthy hair grow in.

I know that is not what you want to hear I did not want to hear it I spent so much money on things that promised to rebuild my hair they made it feel nicer for a day but they did not fix the damage nothing can.

Once I accepted that I stopped being so mad at my hair it was not betraying me it was just being hair.

So here is where I have landed, wash your hair when it is dirty trim it when the ends look sad brush it gently use conditioner where you want to and do not believe anyone who says they can fix split ends, with a jar of cream.

Your hair is not a problem to solve it is hair it does not need to be perfect.

Now go easy on yourself you are doing fine really.
