Common Anti-Aging Skincare Mistakes That Accelerate Aging

I will never forget the morning I looked in the mirror and thought, why do I look older than I did year. I was doing everything I thought was right for my skin. I had all the skin creams. I had all the skin serums. I even had a ten step skin routine that I followed every day.. Somehow my skin looked really tired and dull. Those lines around my mouth they were definitely not going away. My skin was not looking the way I wanted it to look. I had my skin creams and my skin serums and my routine. My skin still looked old. My skin looked tired and dull. Those little lines, around my mouth were still there.

That is when it hit me. Maybe I was not doing everything. Maybe I was making anti aging skin care mistakes without even knowing it.. Honestly most of us are making these mistakes. We are trying hard spending so much money and accidentally making things worse.

I want to talk about skin care for getting older. We can be honest, with each other. I have tried lots of things that did not work out well. I am going to share those things with you about anti aging skin care. I have made every mistake in aging skin care that I am about to tell you about.

The Exfoliation Obsession

I used to believe that the squeaky clean feeling was the thing for my face. I liked that feeling I got after I washed my face. It felt like my skin was really clean. I thought that was what clean skin was supposed to feel like.

Every morning. Every night I would scrub my face with those little exfoliating beads. I thought they were helping to get my skin really clean. I would use face wash that was really harsh, on my skin. It would strip my skin of everything. I even went out. Bought one of those rotating brushes to help clean my face. I thought it would make my skin feel even cleaner.

My skin was always red and tight. So tight that smiling felt uncomfortable. I was making one of the damaging anti aging skin care mistakes. All that scrubbing was not revealing skin it was creating micro tears that triggered inflammation.. Inflammation breaks down collagen.

Now I exfoliate my skin two times a week. That’s it. My skin looks calmer, brighter and smoother, than before. I used to scrub it every day. Now its much better.

My Sunscreen Delusion

For most of my adult life I only wore sunscreen at the beach. I thought that if it was a day I did not need sunscreen. I thought that if I was just driving to work I would be fine. I thought that if I had skin I was protected.

All of these thoughts were wrong. Up to ninety percent of aging comes from the sun. Most of what we call aging is actually sun damage. Not genetics just the sun doing its thing while we pretend it is not.

I finally started applying sunscreen every morning, rain or shine. Even when I am home all day. It took forever to make it a habit. Now it is like brushing my teeth. My skin looks healthier at forty than it did at thirty. That is not a coincidence.

The Active Ingredient Overload

When I discovered skin serums I went completely off the rails. I used vitamin C in the morning. I used retinol at night. I used niacinamide in between. I used acid, peptides, everything.

My skin was a mess. It was all red and peeling. It felt sensitive to everything I put on it. Even the moisturizer I used which is really gentle would sting my skin. I was doing some things with my anti aging skin care routine. I was making mistakes by putting much stuff on my skin barrier. My skin is not, like a sponge that can just soak up anything. When I put a lot of active ingredients on my skin especially ones that do not work well together I was actually hurting my skin instead of helping my anti aging skin care.

These days I keep it simple. I use one ingredient in the morning one at night. I introduced them slowly. Learned to actually read my skin signals. That redness I used to ignore now I see it as a warning sign.

The Neck Betrayal

For fifteen years I applied creams to my face and stopped at my jawline. I thought my neck did not count.

Then one day I caught my reflection in a department store mirror. My face looked pretty good. My neck looked old. Those horizontal lines, the crepey texture it looked much older than my face.

I had been making one of the common anti aging skin care mistakes. My neck and décolletage have skin and fewer oil glands than my face. They need love too.

Now I put all my skincare products all the way down to my chest.

I use a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen and everything in, between.

It did take some time to get into the habit. Now it feels strange to only apply them up to my chin.

The Moisturizer Misunderstanding

I have skin. For the time I thought that meant I did not need moisturizer. I thought I was already shiny so I did not need it.

My skin was dehydrated. It was producing oil to compensate for the lack of water.. Dehydrated skin shows every fine line.

This is one of those mistakes people make with aging skin care that seems to make sense. Is actually wrong. Oily skin needs moisture like dry skin does and sometimes even more.

I started using a moisturizer with acid and it really worked. Within a weeks my skin looked fuller. The lines, around my mouth weren’t deep anymore. My skin stopped producing much oil and it finally felt calm like it knew I was taking care of it. I use moisturizer. It has hyaluronic acid. My skin looks better. Oily skin needs moisture.

The Expired Product Denial

When my vitamin C serum turned orange I kept using it. I thought it was expensive. I was not wasting it.

It turns out oxidized vitamin C does not just stop working it can cause stress. My cheapness was actually aging my skin faster.

Using products is one of those anti aging skin care mistakes that feels frugal but is counterproductive. I check the little jar symbol on my products and if something has changed color, smell or texture it is time to let it go.

The Nights I Was Too Tired

There have been nights when I crawled into bed and told myself I will wash my face in the morning.

Sleeping in makeup is one of the anti aging skin care mistakes you can make. All that pollution, bacteria and free radicals sit on your skin for hours breaking down collagen.

Now I double cleanse every night when I am exhausted. It takes three minutes. I put on a podcast. Just do it. Waking up with happy skin is worth those three minutes every time.

The Eye Cream Massacre

I used to apply eye cream like I was kneading dough. I would use circles really working it in.

The skin around my eyes is ten times thinner than the rest of my face. I was dragging that skin and creating the very wrinkles I was trying to prevent.

Now I use my ring finger. Gently pat the product in. No dragging just soft tapping. Such a small change made such a difference.

What I Finally Understand

After all these years all these mistakes here is what I have learned. My skin does not need perfection it needs consistency, gentleness and protection. Sunscreen every day, cleansing, proper hydration a few carefully chosen active ingredients that is really it. Everything else is noise.

My skin has been with me through everything, nights, stress, joy, tears. It tells my story. So I do not punish it for aging I just be kind to it. That is all it has ever asked for.

If you have made some of these mistakes welcome, to the club. We are all learning together.. The beautiful thing is, it is never too late to start treating your skin with the gentle loving care it deserves.
