Sunscreen and Aging: Why SPF Is the Most Important Anti-Aging Product

I was thirty four years old standing in my bathroom in my pajamas my hair was all over the place. I tilted my face toward the window. I saw them. Little lines around my eyes that I could have sworn were not there week. My stomach did that thing. You know the thing.

I grabbed my phone. Started buying expensive creams. I bought retinol, peptides and some vitamin C thing that cost a fortune. I felt so grown up.

I completely forgot about sunscreen.

My Sister Called Me Out

That week I was complaining to my older sister on the phone. My sister is an accountant she is very sensible she wears glasses. She has zero patience for my drama. I was telling her about all these products I bought and she just listened. Then she asked me: “Do you wear sunscreen?”

I said: “Well.”

She asked: “Every day?”

I said: “Not every day.”

My sister laughed. It was that laugh. The one that says I love you but you are being so dumb now. “You are spending all this money fixing a roof that is still leaking. Just wear sunscreen you idiot.”

Now I just wish that someone would have told me this earlier

My childhood was in India. Sunscreen was only for the beach. Sunscreen was for the foreign people. Sunscreen was that thick whitish paste which would make my grandmother look like a ghost. No one ever informed me about wearing sunscreen for aging being the most important factor. No one ever told me about “It is mostly the sun and nothing to do with aging which causes skin aging”

If only someone told me that. I was twenty-something living in Delhi without any worry about the sun for I was sure that my brown skin protected me from it. No sunburns meant that I was safe from the sun. What I did not know was the damage the sun was causing me by destroying my collagen slowly year after year through individual rays of sun. The lines, the sallow skin tone, the dark patches on my cheek – none of them were a result of aging but sun damage I was unaware of.

Nothing would reverse it.

The Sunscreen Disaster

So I decided to change. I was going to wear sunscreen. Every day. Like an adult.

My first try was a nightmare.

This stuff was really thick. It felt like chalk. It made my skin look white. That would last for days. I felt like I had poured flour over my head when I walked around. The sunscreen gave me acne and my body smelled like a swimming pool with much chlorine, in it. I did not like the sunscreen all.

I kept trying. Because I knew, down that if I was not using sunscreen for anti aging everything else I was doing did not matter. It was just pretending.

I tried sunscreens, Korean sunscreens, Japanese sunscreens. Some made me greasy some made me flaky some made my eyes sting bad I looked like I had been crying for hours. It was exhausting.

Then I found it. It was lightweight. It did not leave a cast. It sat beautifully under my makeup. It did not break me out. It was a little expensive. It was worth every rupee.

If you tried one sunscreen and hated it please do not give up. There are many sunscreens out there. Something will work for you. You just have to keep looking.

My Mornings Now

Now I put on sunscreen every day without thinking. Not because I am some disciplined person. I am really not.. I made it as normal as brushing my teeth. I wash my face then I apply moisturizer, and then sunscreen. Three things. Thirty seconds. Done.

I used to stop at my jawline like my neck did not exist. Now I bring sunscreen all the way down.. I rub the extra into my hands. Those poor hands get much sun just from driving from walking from everyday life. We never think about them.

I always have a stick with me in my bag. To be honest I don’t reapply sunscreen every two hours like I’m supposed to. I mean it’s hard to find the time.. When I’m heading outside I make sure to reapply it. If I start sweating I reapply sunscreen again. I’m extra careful when I’m, at the beach. On a basis I try to do what I can without overdoing it.

The Surprising Part

Here is the one thing that I had not expected to happen. Applying sunscreen does not scare me. Make me worry about the sunscreen and aging too much. The sunscreen makes me feel really relaxed. I feel like I am really doing something with the sunscreen.

Before I would look in the mirror and freak out every little line. Now I look. I think: I am taking care of my skin. I am protecting it. I am doing my best for my self.. Somehow the lines do not bother me as much. They just feel normal. Human.

I do not want to look twenty. Honestly I do not. I want to look like me. Healthy, comfortable happy in my skin. Sunscreen helps with that. Not because it stops time but because it stops the damage. The damage I could have prevented along.

One Thing

If I could tell my younger self one thing it would not be about serums or facials or any of that. Just this: wear sunscreen. Every single day. Not because you are scared of wrinkles. Because you deserve to age naturally on your terms without extra damage you could have avoided. Your skin is the one you have got. Take care of it.

That is it. That is the thing. Everything else is just extra.

Find your sunscreen. The one that does not feel gross or break you out or make you look weird. Make it part of your morning. Your little routine. Your tiny act of kindness, to yourself.

Then relax. Let go of all that panic. You are already beautiful. Now you are just giving yourself a gift, one day at a time.
