Okay so listen I thought I knew how to plan a trip before I got married like actually thought I was good at it
You know the scene right same old expensive resorts same overpriced tourist traps same generic itinerary every other couple follows everyone comes home broke and secretly disappointed they spent their entire savings on a room they barely slept in because they were too stressed about how much it cost I showed up to my own wedding planning thinking I’d just book something fancy call it a day and have the perfect romantic getaway like every movie told me I should
I was so naive it’s honestly embarrassing
My first attempt at planning a honeymoon I opened my laptop with a glass of wine feeling all adult and sophisticated started looking at Maldives resorts and my soul left my body through my wallet Twelve thousand dollars for a week I sat there staring at the screen like a confused goldfish wondering who on earth has that kind of money
That’s when I realized I was doing it all wrong
Took me forever to figure it out I made mistakes I looked at the wrong destinations I booked flights at the wrong time I nearly paid for a five star resort in Santorini that would have left us eating instant noodles for six months I’d wake up in the middle of the night grabbing my phone calculating and recalculating thinking why is this so expensive

Sit down with your partner with zero screens no phones no laptops just you two and a notebook Ask each other the real questions What do you actually want from this trip Adventure or relaxation Fancy food or street food New places or just somewhere beautiful to hold hands
My partner said he wanted to try street food and go hiking I wanted to lie on a beach and read trashy novels We were planning completely different trips and didn’t even know it Once we figured that out everything got easier We found a place that had both and we didn’t have to sell a kidney to afford it
That’s the thing about planning a honeymoon on a budget you can’t plan it alone You have to actually talk to each other Like really talk Not just say whatever you want honey and then secretly resent every decision
Stop Looking at the Obvious Places
Everyone dreams of Paris Maldives or Bora Bora because those names have been marketed to us as the ultimate romantic destinations But here’s the truth those places are expensive because everyone wants to go there
Instead of Santorini try Crete or Naxos Same beautiful blue water fewer crowds and you can actually afford to eat without taking out a loan Instead of Hawaii consider Mexico’s Riviera Maya Gorgeous beaches amazing food and flights that won’t make you cry Instead of Switzerland look at Slovenia or the Italian Dolomites Mountains that take your breath away without taking your entire savings
I almost booked the Maldives until I realized we could go to Thailand for two weeks including flights hotels food activities and still have money left over And Thailand was incredible The beaches were stunning the food was life changing and we didn’t spend the whole trip calculating because we actually planned a honeymoon on a budget that worked for us
Think about places where your money goes further Portugal Thailand Colombia South Africa These countries offer incredible value and they’re just as romantic as the overhyped spots sometimes even more because you’re not surrounded by other tourists taking the same photos
Flights Are Where Dreams Go to Die
Flights can eat half your budget if you’re not careful and honestly that is the most annoying part of any trip
Use flight comparison tools and set price alerts I cannot stress this enough set the alerts and wait I know waiting is hard especially when you’re excited but patience saves money Also be flexible with your dates Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday can save you hundreds of dollars
If you have credit card points now is the time to use them I cashed in all my points for our flights and basically got one ticket free That alone made our honeymoon on a budget feel actually possible
Budget airlines are also your friend if you’re traveling within a region Just watch the baggage fees because that’s where they get you Pack light pack smart and don’t pay for luggage you don’t need
Book about two to three months in advance for domestic flights and four to five for international Last minute deals sound romantic but they rarely work for honeymoons because you need actual dates not just vibes
Where to Sleep Without Crying
Luxury resorts are tempting I get it The photos look amazing the infinity pools the room service But here’s the thing you’re not going to spend that much time in your room You’re going to be out exploring and collapsing into bed exhausted at the end of the day Do you really need a butler for that
Vacation rentals are game changers for a honeymoon on a budget You get a whole apartment with a kitchen which means you can cook breakfast and save money on meals Plus it feels more like actually living somewhere than being a tourist
Boutique guesthouses are another great option They’re often cheaper than hotels and way more personal The owners actually care about you and give recommendations that aren’t in guidebooks
Hostels with private rooms exist and they’re not just for backpackers Many offer ensuite doubles at a fraction of hotel prices You get the social vibe and cheap price but still have your own space
Also look for honeymoon packages Some places give you free champagne or spa credits just because you mention it’s your honeymoon It costs nothing to ask
Eating Without Going Broke
Eating out three meals a day in tourist areas will ruin any budget But food is one of the best parts of traveling so don’t skip it just be clever
Eat where the locals eat Street food markets and family restaurants are where the real magic happens The food is authentic and cheap and you’ll have way better stories
Book somewhere with a kitchen even a tiny one Cook breakfast together it’s actually romantic Making coffee and eggs while you’re both still in pajamas and the sun is coming up over a new city that’s the good stuff
Take advantage of lunch specials Fancy restaurants often offer cheaper menus at lunchtime Go then and save money without missing out
Set aside a splurge fund for one or two really nice meals Maybe a sunset dinner on the beach That’s fine Just plan for it Make it special Then eat street food the rest of the time and be happy about it
Free Things That Feel Like Luxury
You don’t need expensive tours to create magical memories Nature is free and nature is romantic
Hiking swimming beach days sunsets all cost zero dollars and they’re the things you’ll actually remember Not the tour bus Not the crowded boat
Free walking tours are available in most cities and they’re actually amazing You learn about the place meet other travelers and tip what you can afford
Museums often have free days on certain weekdays Plan around that
Rent bicycles instead of taxis It’s cheaper healthier and way more romantic Riding through a new city together holding hands when you can and laughing when you get lost That’s a memory
Pack a picnic with local bread cheese fruit and wine and find a beautiful spot to watch the sunset I promise that beats any overpriced rooftop bar
Getting Around Without Getting Ripped Off
Transportation costs add up fast Taxis and rental cars are convenient but they eat money
Public transport is your friend Trains buses metros are affordable and give you a local experience
Ride sharing apps are often cheaper than cabs and you know what you’re paying upfront
Walk everywhere you can It’s romantic It’s free It lets you discover little alleys and shops you’d never see from a car
Every dollar saved on transport is a dollar for something fun

Create a loose plan but leave room for spontaneity The best memories happen when you get lost and find something unexpected
